Orang Laut
LASALLE College Of The Arts / School Assignment
A main individual in their home village (Kelong) who is living their day to day life. Running errands, rowing out to the sea capturing fishes to bring food home to their family. But when the colonists took over, the declination of the orang laut increases. They are almost up to extinction and are seen as specimens and are deemed as minorities who didn’t belong there. They were then captured by the colonisers and labelled as specimens. They are then re-formatted to fit to societal standards and be put into a context of the HDB home as their settlement/home village have been demolished. This in turn, gives power to the colonisers due to the lack of balance. This is satire to how this is still prevalent in our society up till this day.
This was a major project for my 3rd Year in Diploma Studies. Semester 1. It was a group work and the assignment was to create a Fashion Photo Story. It challenges us to create a narrative and to be combined with fashion. Allowing us to have our own themes and interpretations, furthermore, understanding how a small detail could symbolise much more.
